I'd never even heard of or seen a 10" rack before. Are these becoming popular?

Jeff Geerling talks about them quite a lot for some time. Like having portable lab, with Raspi's and switch and so on.

We're approaching LAN Party scenarios like in the 90 but this time for home-labers :)

Actually me too would prefer a 19" rack as usually more than a firwall is mounted in it.

          Regards

Totally agree that 19 inch is the standard, especially if you are mounting more than just a firewall.

The idea here is not to replace a full 19 inch rack, but to offer an alternative when something small helps. The photo shows a real world example of this. This kind of arrangement extends what the 2100 can do while keeping everything in a very small footprint.

With this setup you get the firewall, PoE switching (Teltonika TSW101), Wi-Fi, 5G/LTE WAN backup (Teltonika RUTM30), and a bit of extra compute power from the Pi for things like monitoring or small services. With 12V power distribution you also only need a single power supply instead of one per device, which keeps things very tidy.

Just sharing ideas and use cases, guys 🙂.

What else would you add to a compact 10 inch rack like this?

@chpalmer Yes, great idea. The 4U version of the DeskPi RackMate this is mounted on actually comes with a metal shelf for things like a cable or DSL modem.

A UPS. Not quite sure how though. Maybe externally? Or maybe some company makes one small enough?

@itandgeneral maybe a small battery backup do only version to avoid wasted ac conversion.

@itandgeneral Looks great! Apart from the free offer in the UK, can just the rack mount itself be purchased by a US based customer? I don't see it for sale separately anywhere on your site.

Thanks for the kind words 🙂

At the moment we’re offering the 10" rack mount as a free add-on for UK customers purchasing a Netgate 2100, which is why it isn’t listed separately on the site.

That said, we’ve had a few enquiries from outside the UK, so we’re looking at the best way to offer it as a standalone item.

If you’re based in the US and would like one, feel free to drop us a message via the website and we can look at shipping options.

                            Appreciate the interest!
